Pedagogical and curricular changes to tradition chemistry instruction can improve students’ understanding of matter at an atomic and molecular level and better address how energy flows during chemical changes. At the beginning of the year, students design Fast Plant experiments which seek to explain where the matter comes from as plants grow from seed to adult. Tracing matter and energy are themes throughout each unit that follows.
