Using Leaf Prints to Teach About Microorganisms and Ecology

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

In this lab activity, students culture leaf epiphytes on a variety of media to get a sense of the abundant life all around us! In the process, they learn about bacteria, fungi, plants, and ecology. This is a great lab to teach about microbiology, competition, cooperation, and more. The results are amazing and always fascinate my students. I will provide the lab, show sample results, and discuss ways that it can be used in the classroom.

Science/Biology teacher, Arrowhead High School
I've been teaching science/biology for over 30 years. I prefer to get students doing labs and moving around--looking at learning from multiple angles. I'm especially passionate about native plants and ecosystems, restoration ecology, and reconciliation ecology.
