Science Skill Instruction
This session will focus on how to teach the science skills through targeted strategy instruction. Our goal is to tackle the most difficult skills to teach and learn, looking at what strategies are the most effective for helping students grow their college readiness in each of the three ACT skill areas. We will provide resources on how to teach these, as well as ideas for assessments and feedback.

Using Technology in a Biology Classroom to Encourage Student Choice and Voice
We will be presenting numerous instructional ways that we have used technology to personalize our science curriculum and allow students to take on more ownership of their learning in our classrooms. Examples we will discuss will be from our Biology classes, but it would be very easy to integrate these practices into any science class. Choice notes, project options, and a variety of tools of technology including Clips, Canvas, GAFE, and Graphical Analysis.

CER- You Know What it is, but how do you teach and assess it?
Teaching students to make sense of data they have collected and to describe the phenomenon they observe is crucial to them becoming critical thinkers and not merely memorizing vast amounts of information. Using Claims, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) is an excellent way to help students to learn and to meet the NGSS. CER is more than just coming to a conclusion. Students, when asked to make a conclusion after the completion of a lab often will say something like, “The heavier ball made a bigger impact”. They are often quite good at stating what happened (the claim) but fall short of giving proof (evidence) or demonstrating that they understand the why (reasoning). These are not intuitive and students must be given explicit instruction and multiple opportunities to practice these skills. This session will share examples that have been used in our middle and high school classrooms and rubrics for assessment of these skills.
